Allergy Treatment Options at Southwest Mississippi ENT

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances and triggers that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, called allergens, trigger a wide range of symptoms as the body tries to fight them off. As a response, the immune system releases a chemical called histamine and this causes inflammation among other symptoms. Allergies are a pain to manage and can quickly impact one’s quality of life.

At Southwest Mississippi ENT, it is our ultimate goal to provide our patients with the best treatment plans that are tailored to their unique needs. We work closely with all of our patients and guide them in making the best treatment decisions for their allergies.

What are Common Allergens?

An allergy occurs when the immune system overreacts to a typically harmless substance, known as an allergen. This reaction can trigger symptoms affecting the skin, eyes, lungs, sinuses, and other parts of the body.

Each allergy sufferer is unique in terms of what triggers their allergies – but the most common allergens include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Pet dander
  • Food
  • Medications
  • Insect Stings
  • Latex

What are Common Allergy Symptoms?

Allergy symptoms vary depending on the allergen that triggered the symptoms and the part of the body affected, but common allergy symptoms include:
  • Frequent sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Hives or skin rashes
  • Swelling, especially in the face or throat
  • Anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause breathing difficulties, dizziness, and a drop in blood pressure. This requires immediate medical attention.

What Causes Allergies?

Allergies occur when the immune system misidentifies a harmless substance as a threat. The immune system reacts by producing antibodies called IgE (immunoglobulin E), which triggers the release of a chemical called histamine. When the body produces histamine, it causes the blood vessels to expand. This leads to inflammation and other common allergy symptoms. In normal circumstances, this kind of response protects the body, but in the case of an allergic reaction, it becomes an exaggerated and unnecessary reaction to a harmless substance.

What are Treatment Options for Allergies?

There are a variety of treatment options for allergy sufferers. The right treatment for your allergies largely depends on what caused it, the severity of the symptoms, and the duration of the allergies. Here are common treatments for allergies:

Allergy Medications: While most allergy medications don’t technically treat allergies at their root cause, they do treat most of the symptoms. An allergy specialist (known as an allergist) will help you determine which medications will fit best for your condition and lifestyle. Allergy medications can come in many forms including:

  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants
  • Nasal sprays
  • Pills
  • Liquid solutions
  • Eye drops
  • Skin creams
  • Inhalers

Immunotherapy: If you are looking for long-term relief that will treat allergies at their root cause and will not only tackle the symptoms, immunotherapy might be your best bet. Immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment for allergies and it has been around for more than a century. What immunotherapy does is train the immune system to be less reactive to allergens by introducing small amounts of allergens into your system. Over time, your body develops a resistance to these allergens, causing allergies to reduce or go away completely. There are two types of immunotherapy:

  • Allergy Shots: Regular injections of allergens in increasing amounts is given to the patient, helping the immune system build a tolerance to their allergens over time.
  • Allergy Drops: Allergy drops work the same way as allergy shots but are administered via liquid drops under the tongue instead of as injections on the skin. Allergy shots can be safely administered at home, making it more convenient than shots that will require trips to the doctor’s office.
  • Avoidance: Lastly, one of the simplest yet most effective ways to manage allergies is to avoid your allergens whenever possible. Depending on what your allergens are, lifestyle changes may vary. If you are allergic to pollen, then you will need to stay indoors during peak pollen season. If you have food allergies, then make sure to remove those food items from your diet completely.
