Dr. William Knox Austin is a distinguished otolaryngologist who has dedicated nearly five decades to serving the Southwest Mississippi community. A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi, he pursued his passion for medicine at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1970. His commitment to excellence was evident early on, earning the Louisiana-Mississippi Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology Association Award for outstanding achievement in his field. After completing his residency in Otolaryngology at University Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident, Dr. Austin became board-certified in Otolaryngology in 1975 and has since continued to advance the field through his leadership and expertise.
Dr. Austin’s contributions to surgical innovation and patient care extend beyond the exam room. He has held numerous leadership positions, including Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, where he has been on staff since 1975. As the longtime Medical Director of the Ambulatory Surgery Center, he has played a pivotal role in ensuring top-tier surgical care for his patients. His expertise spans general ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, as well as facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, allergy treatment, and head and neck surgery, making him a trusted name in the region.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Austin has been an active leader in medical societies, serving as President of the Mississippi Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Association and holding fellowships in the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His commitment to education and mentorship is reflected in his work with the University of Mississippi’s Premedical and Predental Advisory Council, where he has guided future medical professionals in their journeys.
While his medical career is marked by outstanding achievements, Dr. Austin is just as dedicated to his community. An active Rotarian with over 49 years of perfect attendance, he has served as President of the McComb Rotary Club, as well as a leader in organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, the American Cancer Society, and the Pike County Arts Council. A man of strong faith, he is a devoted member of First Baptist Church in McComb, where he has served as a youth counselor and Sunday School director.
